Frequently Asked Questions about facultytraining.net

What exactly do you do?

Consulting on professional development, online instructor training, and instructional design assistance. We work with instructors online and/or face to face. We're like success coaches for faculty or training departments. We transfer skills and tips and successful approaches we've learned from working with more than 125 organizations and institutions worldwide.

What else can facultytraining.net do?

We build Performance Support Systems--meaning multimedia tutorials, guides, and customizable resources available 24/7. And we teleconference on key subjects as part of a comprehensive strategy for program success.

What is your emphasis?

How to teach online (or blended online with classroom delivery) in a way that really works and doesn't burn you or your students out. Also to use blogs, audio, and other simple multimedia effectively. And if you desire, we can help you add an environmental component to any course.

What do you mean "add an environmental component"?

Almost every course subject can use environmental problems and issues to help teach the subject matter. Sustainability issues are becoming crucial in the design of competitive products and services, and thus an essential skill for workers and professionals in every field. We can help you get started.

How does your Online Instructor Training course work?

Our rigorous OIT course requires 3-4 hours per week, for between 8-12 weeks, depending on the outcomes desired. We've found that's just about the right combination of length and intensity to really build effectiveness and confidence in those relatively new to online teaching. But we can tailor the timing, topics, and delivery to meet your requirements.

How will I learn the software involved?

A little at a time. As you need it. With screen-casted tutorials (where the actual screen and mouse movement is recorded along with an explanation of what we're doing). Then you can go back "just-in-time," stop and start where you want, as many times as you want. Who can (or wants to) keep all that stuff memorized?

Why shouldn't we just do it all ourselves?

Because you might find an injection of fresh ideas, energy and proven-to-work techniques very liberating and inspiring. So you can concentrate on the 1001 other things on your "to-do" list. Could you use more time? Sometimes a program just needs a boost from "outside" to get things moving forward.

What if we already have some expert online faculty?

That's excellent! If some of the participants are experienced online, we'll look to them to share what has worked and what hasn't worked with the rest of your faculty. Maybe the best result of all is when we see expert faculty working together with novices and sharing ideas during and after training. Would you like to see more of that at your institution? We facilitate that outcome.

What if we DON'T know much about how to teach online?

No worries. We've helped many schools that were just beginning an online program and watched them grow dramatically. We can train your trainers--or we can step in as your start up training department until you grow your program to an appropriate number of students. Whatever stage your online program is at, we can help.
